The Half-Acre Urban Farm offers organically grown, local, fresh vegetables for sale via a CSA subscription.
CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. It is a model of farming that connects consumers directly with farmers. The consumer purchases a share in the farm and receives a weekly box of in-season, freshly picked vegetables. In knowing the farmer, the consumer knows the source of his food, is able to support local agriculture, and receives a weekly basket of the freshest vegetables in town.
Anne Therese Stephens is the owner and founder of the Half-acre Urban Farm in Fort Wayne. She has been farming-gardening on an urban level for 7 years and thoroughly enjoys “almost” every dimension of it! :) Usually, she gardens barefoot (with some small exceptions), since it is easier to wash ones feet than to wash ones socks.
She began selling CSA shares in 2020, but took a break (in selling vegetables) the past few years due to life changes. Now, it is the time to restart the engine and provide boxes for those seeking some tasty, organically grown, and reasonably priced vegetables.
Frequently Asked Questions

The vegetable choice is yours: the weekly CSA box is customizable for your weekly needs. While the options will vary depending on what is in season, you have the opportunity to choose from among those items. For example, if you do not favor radishes, you could select two bunches of carrots that week instead of one bunch of radishes/one bunch of carrots.
Flexibility: You can sign up for any or all of the 3 seasons. Discounts are available when you sign up for all 3 seasons and pay up front. If you will be out of town one week, you have the option to pick up a double share the following week. Or you could have a friend experience the joy of picking up your share.
Unbeatable Deals: Be offered unbeatable deals on the freshest and tastiest vegetables in town. While we are not certified organic, all of our procedures are organic based. The vegetables you receive on a weekly basis are not only grown locally, but have the quality of organic.
Discounts on building your Homestead Pantry: In the fall we offer vegetables in bulk. The following vegetables in bulk: tomatoes, potatoes, sweet potatoes, garlic, winter squash (includes butternut squash, acorn squash), and onions. This is a limited opportunity. If you sign up for at least one CSA season (spring, summer, fall), you have first dibs on purchasing bulk veggies and a discount on purchasing a share of the Homestead Pantry. You could buy bulk of just one kind of vegetable or you could purchase a share of each which would provide you the best discount.
Discounts on very seasonal items: strawberries, rhubarb, honey, asparagus. A limited amount of chicken eggs are also offered.
Connect with others locally: When you pick up your CSA, you have the opportunity to meet the farmer and those involved in growing and harvesting the crops. You may also run into other CSA members and have an opportunity to build relationships with them. Moreover, you have the opportunity to see where the vegetables are grown.
Weekly Newsletter: Each week our members receive a short but sweet newsletter which discusses ways you can cook or preserve the in-season vegetables. This newsletter is an encouragement and an education to assist you in establishing habits to eat the vegetables that are in season.

You get 8-10 items each week depending on what's in season. Some weeks, if we have a surplus, you'll get freebie 2-for-1 items! An item is usually measured in quarts (potatoes, onions), pints (garlic, cherry tomatoes), or bunches (carrots, beets) depending on what it is. Some items, like cabbage, winter squash, and head lettuce, are measured by quantity. Baby lettuce, green beans, and peas are a bagged item and are weighed.
-
It really depends on your selections. Weight varies a lot depending on the veggie; bunches of carrots typically weigh 2-3 pounds, while bagged lettuce is around half a pound. If you pick only root vegetables, tomatoes, and other heavy veggies, your share could end up weighing 25 pounds!
-
You can add eggs onto your share. There are limited quantities of egg shares available, so be sure to snatch one up when they're available.
